For the extra-curious ..

When I was 10 years old, my grandpa came over for a visit. We always got along very well, and our shared love of music made our relationship especially special. During that visit, he gave me a tiny 1/2-size nylon-string classical guitar, and I loved it immediately, even though I had never played guitar before. I can still remember jumping around the basement of our house, playing air guitar along to AC/DC and Queen.

Later that year—or possibly the year after—I went camping with my family in the summer. A couple of my parents' friends, both of whom played guitar, taught me my first few chords on that guitar, and the rest is history. I became completely infatuated with playing, and it’s been a challenging yet rewarding journey ever since.

Growing up in a small southern Manitoba town, Altona, I always thought that boredom played a role in sparking my desire to play. But looking back, I think it was more that I simply loved playing. In those early years, I probably tried to learn dozens of Led Zeppelin and AC/DC songs—sometimes on just one string. Every time I encountered a skilled guitarist, I was in awe. They seemed almost magical, like wizards, and I was desperate to know how to do what they did. That excitement was real.

To this day, if I’m lucky, I can still chase that same feeling. I believe that’s what it’s all about—holding on to that inner drive and passion, never letting go. That, in itself, is the dream: to never lose that feeling and to keep being creative.
